BBC SPORT | Olympics & Olympic sport | London 2012 | Ottley seeking javelin 2012 stars: "Shropshire's former Olympic medallist Dave Ottley is throwing himself into reviving the fortunes of the javelin for the 2012 Games.

The man who won silver in Los Angeles in 1984 has seen British javelin throwing slip out of the headlines.

'We no longer have top names like Steve Backley, Mick Hill or Kelly Morgan,' he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

'So what we're doing is trying to use the excitement of this year's Games to generate kids' interest ahead of 2012.'"

Residents face Games park 'tax' after 2012 | Evening Standard

Residents face Games park 'tax' after 2012 | Evening Standard: "Thousands of residents and businesses will be forced to pay an Olympic 'tax' to locate in the Games park, the Evening Standard has learned.

Games chiefs are planning to recoup millions of pounds by charging a premium to those who move into the 500-acre site after the 2012 Olympics.

A levy, collected typically by a housing association or managing agent, will come in the form of a maintenance charge or ground rent.

The scheme has been borrowed from cities in America, where it has become a common way of contributing to costs of municipal parks.

The plan is being considered by the London Development Agency as part of a 'legacy masterplan' for the Olympic park, where it is the major landowner.

Last month it emerged a £1 billion black hole may appear in Olympics finances if property values slump in east London after the Games.

The LDA believes premium-rate ground rents would be justified considering the amenities that would be on residents' doorsteps.

As well as being amid a green space the size of Hyde Park, they will have new public transport links and stations, and will be able to use the Park's world-class sporting facilities, such as the aquatics centre. There will be 9,000 new homes in the park and 40,000 in the wider Lower Lea Valley area."

Alex Salmond said the 2012 Olympics had cost good causes in Scotland £150m.

He said: 'It is entirely reasonable to call for an equivalent sum to be returned to Scotland to help us deliver a real, lasting legacy.'

Mr Salmond was speaking as he launched a public consultation on the legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

'The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring the legacy is the right one, not just for the people of Glasgow - for everyone living, working and visiting Scotland,' he said.

He said the next step would include pursuing lottery funding."

“That (2012) would be the ideal moment to consider about my exit,” the 27-year-old maestro was quoted as saying in ‘The Roger Federer Story: Quest for Perfection’.

“I don’t think that I’ll just quit one day and retire early because I’m tired. I really don’t.” he said.

“I understand that the hunger can begin to disappear at some point because you invest so much and, at some point, the body becomes tired. But as a kid I always dreamt of becoming No.1 and it would be wrong if my passion falters at this point,” Federer added."

AFP: Ohuruogu set for track return

AFP: Ohuruogu set for track return: "Christine Ohuruogu, Britain's 400 metres world champion, will begin her build-up to the Beijing Olympics by competing at an indoor Grand Prix meeting in Birmingham on February 16.

The Londoner, who dramatically won gold in Osaka in August just three weeks after completing a year-long suspension for missing a drugs test, is to race over 60 metres and 200 metres.

It will be the 23-year-old Commonwealth champion's only indoor appearance this season with Ohuruogu set to miss the World Indoor Championships in March.

'I don't normally do a lot of indoor running but if there is one event you want to do it is the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham,' Ohuruogu said.

'It's always the highlight of the indoor season. It will be great to get back to what I do best, competitive running, on February 16.'

Ohuruogu, who has been warm-weather training in South Africa, added: 'Training has been going really well for me over the winter and I can't wait for the season to start,' she added.

'What better motivation could there be than the possibility of an Olympic medal at the end of it?'

Ohuruogu was brought up in London, where the 2012 Olympics will be staged, and was widely tipped to be the 'face of the Games' for that event until she was banned for missing three doping tests."

'He's interested in sports and his football,' Beckham told the BBC. 'He is very interested in doing a lot for my academy and also getting involved in schools around the country as well. He's a very good man. ... I'm very proud to be here.'

Brown is expected to visit Beckham's academy in London on Thursday.

Brown is also reportedly interested in having Beckham play a role in the 2018 World Cup bid. England hosted the World Cup in 1966, the only time it won the championship. Beckham helped London's winning bid for the 2012 Olympics.

'David Beckham did a brilliant job helping us winning the Olympics,' Brown said earlier Tuesday. 'I think the whole country was grateful for the work he and others did to make that possible. And if David Beckham can help us in the future on some of the other big national projects that would be to the benefit of the country.'

'Few countries are able to boast of having such sports stars as Nawal Al Moutawakil, Said Aouita and Hicham El Guerrouj', Lord Coe said at a press conference in Casablanca. 'We talked about a range of topics directly or indirectly affecting athletics in Morocco, with the sole purpose of bringing sport up to speed just four years ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games in London,' he explained, adding that the big challenge today is getting young people to take up athletics rather than other activities. Marketing News: London Eye hunts partner after 7-year BA deal ends - Marketing Week

Marketing News: London Eye hunts partner after 7-year BA deal ends - Marketing Week: "The London Eye Company (TLEC) and British Airways are scrapping their partnership after seven years. The pair will part company in February after deciding to end the sponsorship.

TLEC is seeking a new title sponsor for the tourist draw, which is London’s most visited attraction. It is understood that the company has approached the top tier sponsors for the London 2012 Olympics.

TLEC, a division of attraction operator Merlin Entertainments, says that the airline was offered an extension to its contract but BA decided against renewing the deal after selling its financial interest in the Eye in 2005.

It is seeking partners for a five year-plus package, including a possible joint branding deal and involvement in a series of high profile global and UK events.

TLEC claims that it has received approaches from interested parties and denies that it has approached the Olympic sponsors. A spokeswoman says: “The companies concerned are big brands.”

All tier one sponsors of the 2012 London Olympics – Adidas, EDF Energy and Lloyds TSB – have denied any talks with TLEC.

The London Eye opened in March 2000 and attracts over 3.5 million visitors a year. BA was one of the original joint owners of the attraction and instrumental in building its profile.

The TLEC says the new partnership will b"

The complete guide to: Olympic travel - Independent Online Edition > News & Advice

The complete guide to: Olympic travel - Independent Online Edition > News & Advice: "The world's first sporting arena was at Olympia in the Greek western Pelopponese. A five-day festival of chariot and horse-racing, long-jumping and foot-racing was held every four years from 776BC until the Games were abolished nearly 1,200 years later. Happily, a fair amount of ancient Olympia is still intact. Down the centuries, the site has been hit by two earthquakes and severe floods, and the site was almost consumed by forest fires that engulfed the region last August, claiming 63 lives. The field and the surrounding buildings and temples are now overlooked by a hillside of charred trees.

The flames came within a few metres of the rectangular field that was rediscovered only in the 19th century. Years of careful excavation have made sense of the tangle of fallen columns and stones, assisted by scale models in the adjacent museum. The temple of Zeus, three times the size of the Parthenon, has not survived but another, dedicated to Hera, has been almost wholly reconstructed, and its magnificent 4th-century BC statue of Hermes is on display in the museum. Other sights include a monument containing the heart of the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who died in 1937. Ancient Olympia (which reopened within two days of the fires) opens every day from 8.30am-3pm (November-March)"

Home counties tax hike needed to fund Olympics - Times Online

Home counties tax hike needed to fund Olympics - Times Online: "NEW council tax rises may be needed to fund the 2012 Olympics and its aftermath, it has emerged.

A leaked report and parliamentary answers suggest that not only will households in London be affected, but also taxpayers in the surrounding counties, including Essex and Hertfordshire.

Ken Livingstone, the London mayor, has promised that the financial burden of the Olympics will be limited to a maximum of £20 a year per household in London.

However, the documents reveal that ministers could take advantage of obscure powers to help to fund the Games and any extra debts they run up, potentially for decades to come.

Local taxpayers in Montreal took 30 years to pay off the debts that the Canadian city ran up from the 1976 Games. There were also cost overruns for the Athens and Sydney Olympics.

The Tories warn that an obscure regional quango could be used to bear some of the long-term liabilities from the Games. The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA) already owns some of the Olympic park land and, as it is funded from the council tax base of Essex, Hertfordshire and London boroughs through an annual levy, there could be knock-on effects for taxpayers, they claim.

A private and confidential report from Deloitte, the auditor, on the possible implications of the Olympic “legacy” for the LVRPA"

allAfrica.com: Uganda: Beijing Olympics Will Form Bedrock of Promising Year (Page 1 of 1)

allAfrica.com: Uganda: Beijing Olympics Will Form Bedrock of Promising Year (Page 1 of 1): "FEWER competitions rev the juices of the international sportsperson more furiously than the Olympic Games, and the world's biggest games come again this year in August in the Chinese city of Beijing.

And Uganda - for whom success in the Olympic Games has long been the hallmark of sporting success - will not leave anything to chance.

According to the secretary of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) Beatrice Ayikoru, the federation will hold a meeting with the nation's athletes and emphasize the importance of participating at the Olympic Games.

'We are going to advise them to specialise in only one event as qualification is fairly difficult,' Ayikoru said of the federation's plans for the Olympics.

UAF's focus is crucial for athletics will represent Uganda's most realistic hope of securing an Olympic medal following the utter implosion of amateur boxing.

Boxing implodes

Over the years, athletics and boxing have yielded the highest number of Olympic medals -- of the five medals Uganda has won in Olympic history, athletics has claimed two and boxing three - but the latter's chances in Beijing have been significantly diminished by the pugilists failure to qualify.

News: Is the Olympic pitch worth winning for kudos alone? - Marketing Week: "The agency that wins the London 2012 pitch could be asked to become a low-level Olympic sponsor instead of taking a fee. It's an idea which has caused consternation among those being asked to pitch.

Several agencies have slammed the Games organisers for being 'cheapskates' and have criticised the way the pitch is being handled, saying the prestigious account will be a drain on resources and finances. Many are beginning to question whether the kudos of landing the account is enough.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) is considering making the agency a tier-three - or third level - partner in the marketing services category. Other remuneration proposals put forward include the appointed agency taking a percentage of the marketing communications money raised.

Sources have questioned whether such plans indicate an unwillingness to pay directly for services, despite Locog's 'huge' budget and the £400,000 paid to design agency Wolff Olins for the controversial London 2012 logo.

One senior source calls it a 'cheek' that so much was paid for a logo when an agency would have to work 'much harder' for less money.

Another source highlights the enormity of the task, saying it is not simply about creating advertising and marketing messages, but also about adapting them for countries and regions as"

Olympic program good up to 2012 - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos

Olympic program good up to 2012 - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos: "Though pressed for time, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William “Butch” Ramirez isn’t bothered by the delays that have hit the Olympic preparation.

In fact, the PSC chief sees the next eight months before the 2008 Beijing Games as the perfect time to lay down the foundation for a viable long-term program expected to mature in the 2012 London Olympiad.

“Our program will also serve to continue our dream until 2012,” said Ramirez, who is carefully plotting the country’s Olympic battle plan with Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr. and chef de mission Monico Puentevella.

Based on the initial strategy, Ramirez, Cojuangco and Puentevella will convene at least once a week to come up with a set of objectives and implement them.

Once in place, Ramirez said, the strategy for the 2012 Olympics will be culled from the same master plan.

The group will also focus on monitoring the progress of the athletes, who are set to mostly train abroad for the next eight months.

“Even if they say that time is not on our side, our programs, both short-term and long-term, will give us a good fight in Beijing,” said Ramirez. “We are working doubly hard to deliver the first Olympic gold for the country.”

Blame game begins for rail bosses - Telegraph

Blame game begins for rail bosses - Telegraph: "Two high-profile figures are in the frame over the shambles that has blighted the railway system.

One is John Armitt, 61, who was the chief executive of Network Rail until he retired last July. Urbane and popular, he set the strategy to implement the improvement programme that has inflicted so much misery on the travelling public.
advertisement

He had been credited for the recovery of the rail industry after the Railtrack debacle.

Now the inability of Network Rail to deliver a project on time will raise alarm in Whitehall, given that his new task is to make sure that London is ready for the 2012 Olympics.

Mr Armitt passed the baton on to Iain Coucher, 46, in the summer, who is far more abrasive, according to insiders. Ultimately, he will be held responsible for the shambles that occurred on his watch.

Last night Network Rail was blaming the poor project management by contractors.

But a spokesman declined to say who was responsible for choosing them in the first place. 'We are trying to find out what went wrong, not engage in a witch hunt.'

Tom Carrasco, also the Asian Triathlon Confederation senior vice president, said last year’s transfer to the Subic Bay Freeport of the training camp of world-renowned triathlon team TBB (The Bike Boutique) had jumpstarted the Philippines’ quest for an Olympic berth.

After SEAG, cycling eyes 2012 London Olympics - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos: "BIGGER, brighter things are coming Philippine cycling's way after its impressive performance in the recent 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand where it bagged four gold medals.

The Philippine Sports Commission, through chairman William Ramirez, has expressed willingness to fund the cyclists' training which may lead to a stint in the 2012 London Olympics.

An Olympic slot would require a rider to compete in as many UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) races as possible. Such races are particularly staged in Europe and a few in Australia. UCI points are earned in every race regardless of the cyclist's finish.

But before a rider can qualify for UCI races, he must first join UCI training centers in Europe--specifically at the UCI World Cycling Center in Aigle, Switzerland--Melbourne and Sydney and Japan.

Malaysia and Indonesia, which won four gold medals out of the 11 offered in track, sent their riders to Australia and Switzerland.

Cycling emerged as the second most successful national sports association after swimming which produced eight gold medals.

Where to Find Tickets to the Beijing Olympics - Personal Finance - The Good Life - EBAY

Where to Find Tickets to the Beijing Olympics - Personal Finance - The Good Life - EBAY: "Although the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing won't get under way for nearly eight more months, travelers who want to catch the sporting world's most lavish extravaganza will need the endurance of a marathoner and speed of a sprinter to score tickets in the Chinese capital.

Reasonable prices -- the cheapest seats at a few less-popular events, such as baseball, go as low as $5 -- combined with carefully rationed quotas allocated country by country by Chinese officials, have created high demand for tickets to the Games, which will occur Aug. 8 to Aug. 24. Of course, most tickets command higher prices; the cheapest seats for the men's basketball finals, a crowd pleaser, start at $51 and top out at $171.

At the opening ceremony in Beijing's new National Stadium, the best seats in the house are priced at $773; tickets for the closing ceremony in the same stadium cost $488. Buyers are limited to two tickets for each ceremony and eight tickets for individual competitions, with a cap of 48 total tickets per buyer.

The real problem, though, won't be containing yourself and buying only 48 tickets to the Games; it will be getting tickets at all, especially to the events in which you are probably most"

Five reasons why Britain can win Olympic gold - Telegraph

Five reasons why Britain can win Olympic gold - Telegraph: "The countdown to the London Olympics will begin in earnest during the closing ceremony on Aug 24 at the spectacular 91,000 capacity National Stadium, nicknamed the Bird's Nest because of its ornate steel structure.

London will be given an eight-minute segment of the closing ceremony that will be dedicated to the 2012 Games. Expect live link-ups to parties around the UK to celebrate. The mayor who accepts the Olympic flag that heralds the start of the four-year London Olympiad will be known after the election on May 1.

With building work about to begin in London's East End and a call for more Olympic lottery tickets to be sold, it is essential that the London Games are given a kick-start by Britain's success in Beijing.

At the top of the medal table, the contest for first place will be between the United States and the host nation, with China already conceding that the pressure of expectation from the authorities and the population of 1.3 billion could prove too much for many competitors..."

Gatlin banned for four years | Athletics | Guardian Unlimited Sport

Gatlin banned for four years | Athletics | Guardian Unlimited Sport: "Justin Gatlin, the Olympic 100m champion, has been suspended for four years for failing a drugs test, and he could return in time to run in London in 2012.

The 25-year-old Gatlin faced being banned for eight years, but his appeal to an arbitration panel in the United States yesterday saw him suspended for half that time, backdated to April 22 2006, the date he tested positive. Many in the sport might see it as a lucky escape from a potential lifetime ban and, though he may retire, a comeback is not out of the question."

Beach volleyball: Pair prepare to take on world - 01 Jan 2008 - nzherald: Sports news - New Zealand and International Sport news and results

Beach volleyball: Pair prepare to take on world - 01 Jan 2008 - nzherald: Sports news - New Zealand and International Sport news and results: "Deep down, Susan Blundell knew she was good enough for a second dig at life as a professional beach volleyballer.

But the question was, having last played on the world tour four years ago, had she left her run too late?

The 25-year-old Tauranga player spent two seasons on the world pro tour with partner Lucy Todd in '02 and '03, enjoying mixed success before Todd drifted back to Christchurch and a career in science.

Blundell continued to play but, having spent the past three seasons getting her psychology degree in Wellington, she wasn't convinced she'd make it back onto the beach fulltime.

But a month ago it was if someone switched on a light, with Blundell and playing partner, former Silver Ferns netballer Anna Scarlett, taking a leap of faith and committing to the 2008 world tour.

Scarlett, 24, and Blundell are aiming at the London Olympics in 2012, although to guarantee an Olympics berth they need to become one of the top 24 ranked sides on the ultra-competitive tour."

The New Straits Times Online.......

The New Straits Times Online.......: "ON the back of a disappointing Sea Games outing and a lagging road programme, the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) has put into place a new Malaysia Continental Team, geared towards the 2012 Olympics.
Although talk was rife about the possibilities of this team being formed and starting the Jelajah Malaysia next week, the council sitting at the federation's annual general meeting yesterday finally provided an unanimous endorsement.

The 12-man team are funded through the development grant made available by the Government and combines the track endurance squad with the back-up squad of juniors who have just graduated into senior ranks.

Registration as a continental team would allow the team to complement the national road team and score ranking points for the country.

This would lead towards qualification for World Championships and Olympics, although qualification for road events in the latter in 2008 is already closed.
This is, however, a separate programme from the road development programme already running, which holds the national road riders competing in stage races and road events.

Disappointment was the tone within the council in view of the national team's performance in the recent Sea Games, which served to dampen the promise shown in continental and world class events this year."
